Description

  • If your patio's been looking a bit tired recently, then give it a makeover with this gorgeous patio redbud tree! Producing masses of magenta flowers during spring, 'Avondale' is as dazzling as it is easy to look after.
  • Growing to just a metre-and-a-half tall when given an annual trim, this tree is perfect for injecting some colour to your doorstep or balcony.
  • Alongside the fabulous flowers, this variety of Chinese redbud also features attractive, heart-shaped flowers which emerge a purplish hue before maturing to green.
  • The bark of Chinese redbuds has been used in traditional medicine for its purported antiseptic properties, while redbud fossils have been found dating all the way back to the Eocene period, over 30 million years ago!
  • Awarded the RHS's Award of Garden Merit, and rightly so, 'Avondale' has been shown to deliver exceptional performance in British gardens.

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Generally good resistance, but watch out for scale insects and infections such as coral spot. To prevent coral spot and similar diseases, always prune in dry weather. When pruning, cut branches through the collar (ring of slight swelling found at the base of branches). Healing of wounds occurs most quickly here. If die-back occurs after pruning, remove dead material to avoid further infection. Scale insects suck the sap from plants and look like shell-like bumps on the stems and undersides of leaves - check your tree frequently from spring onwards. Light infestations are harmless, but for larger populations, you can remove them by hand or encourage predators like ladybirds, parasitoid wasps and birds.

Water regularly

Redbud trees grown in containers will require more watering than those grown in the ground, with watering being especially important in hot, dry spells.

Full sun to partial shade

Grows well in full sun (at least six hours of direct sunlight per day) and partial shade (three to six hours of direct sunlight per day).

Moist, well-drained compost

Your patio redbud tree will appreciate being planted in moist, well-drained compost like John Innes No. 3.

Feed in spring

Feed your tree with a general-purpose, balanced fertiliser every spring to give it a kickstart for the growing season ahead.

Europe

Meet Josh's trusted specialists

Start with a touch of continental sun

Over 99% of our plants are grown in the UK, but where that’s not possible, Josh sources the best specialist growers in Europe for the job. Think citrus warmed by Sicilian sun, topiary trained by Dutch masters, almonds nourished in the Dordogne and bamboo bathed in Tuscan heat. Our handpicked growers nurture these plants to maturity before handing over to our team in the South Downs, to toughen them up for UK gardens.
