The highlights

  • The hot and sweet classic Caribbean pepper in red, orange or yellow
  • 150-350,000 on the Scoville scale
  • Essential for jerk spiced dishes
  • Compact plants ideal for growing in pots

Description

  • The famous Jerk spice chilli, small but powerful! Scotch bonnets are red, orange or yellow chillies with a sweet, fruity flavour and a serious kick of heat
  • Perfect for Caribbean dishes, but also great in hot sauce, salsa and tex mex food or for drying
  • Grow in a greenhouse, on a sunny patio or in pots on the windowsill
  • 150-350,000 Scoville rating - the Scoville scale measures the spiciness or pungency of chillies. The scale measures the amount of capsaicin (the chemical compound that causes spicy heat) in a pepper and assigns it a number rating in Scoville Heat Units
  • Plant out after the first frosts and harvest at any colour from July to October
  • Premium garden ready plants grown by vegetable experts on a family run farm in Lancashire and sent to you at the best possible time for planting
  • Growing your own gives you healthy, fresh produce with a lower carbon plantprint than anything you can buy from a shop
  • Easy to grow and care for - you should see your first chillies within 12-14 weeks

Hardiness:

Tender annual
H1c - can be grown outside in the summer (5 - 10 degrees). Chillies do best in a warm greenhouse/conservatory or on a windowsill. If that's not possible, make sure you plant them in a sunny, sheltered spot as the plants need consistent warmth and light to produce fruit.

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

May be susceptible to aphids, glasshouse whitefly and glasshouse red spider mite if grown indoors - spray the plants with a mixture of water, soap and vegetable oil to keepo these in check. Prevent mould and mildew by spacing your plants apart well and making sue they have plenty of air flow around the leaves.

Water regularly

Water the plants regularly to keep the ground constantly moist. If you are unsure, feel the soil with your hand. If it feels dry up to a fingernail deep then you can give the plant a watering. During very hot, dry spells you may have to water up to twice a day.

Full sun

Chilli plants need 6-8 hours of full sunlight per day to produce fruit.

Any fertile, well-draining soil

Thrives in any well-drained soil. If your soil is particularly clay-heavy and/or often becomes waterlogged then you can improve the drainage by adding in plenty of organic matter such as garden compost as well as some perlite or gravel.

Feed regularly

Once the plant starts to produce flowers, start feeding them every 10-14 days with a high potassium feed such as liquid tomato fertiliser or chicken manure. Potash, or potassium, is one of the three main elements in fertilisers along with nitrogen and phosphorus. Potash stimulates growth in the fruits and vegetables and so typically gardeners apply it as the plant begins to develop them.
