Description

  • Bare walls are boring, but they don’t have to be… How about you take that dreary fence and convert it into a canvas for delicious fruit production? Well, with an espalier pear tree, that’s exactly what you can do! These trees look brilliant, produce an impressive crop and provide an incredibly effective use of garden space
  • ‘Williams’ Bon Chrétien’ is one of our absolute favourites here at Roots, thanks to its great performance in British gardens, its reliable early harvest and, of course, the excellent taste of its fruit
  • ‘Concorde’ yields pears late into the season that keep exceptionally well (for up to a couple of months) – this variety is also a recipient of the RHS’ Award of Garden Merit!
  • ‘Conference’ is *the* classic dessert pear variety, universally loved for its exceptional taste (both when eaten fresh and used in cooking)
  • Espalier pears need proper training and pruning to get the most from them. Fortunately for you, our growers have taken care of the initial shaping for you, just to get you on your way. For a full guide on caring for your espalier tree, check out our article, How to Espalier Apple Trees – don’t worry, the same rules apply for pear trees as they do apple trees

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Your espalier pear tree might be affected by problems like aphids, caterpillars and pear scab. For information on how to deal with these issues should they occur, check out our article, Fruit Tree Problems: Signs and Solutions.

Water well when establishing

Established pear trees don't normally require much additional watering save for in hot or dry spells. When newly planted, however, as your tree is establishing, more regular watering is recommended.

Full sun

Your espalier pear will be most productive, from a fruiting perspective, when planted in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day).

Any fertile, well-drained soil

Pear trees grow well in loamy soil with good drainage. If your soil isn't very fertile - or its drainage is poor - then amend with some organic compost to give it a helping hand.

Feed every spring

In the spring, give your espalier pear tree a feed with fertiliser that's rich in potassium.
