How To Grow
Good pest and disease resistance
Generally unaffected by pests and diseases, but there are a couple of avoidable problems to look out for. Crown rot is caused by soil or water borne fungi or bacteria. Plants look sickly, fail to grow and rot at the crown. This can spread to the stems and leaves, causing the plant die. It can be avoided by watering only when necessary and at the base of the plant. Slugs and snails can also attack young seedlings as well as the leaves of larger rhubarb plants - surround your plants with a barrier such as copper wire, crushed eggshells or gravel to keep them off.
Water regularly in summer
Water well when new, then during prolonged dry periods in summer once established. Growth will slow down and even stop if conditions are too hot and dry.
Full sun
Plant in full sun for the best results - rhubarb can also deal with a little afternoon shade.
Moist, well draining soil
Plant in any moist, well draining soil. Add plenty of well rotted manure or compost when planting and avoid any site that gets waterlogged in winter.
Feed annually
Rhubarb will grow better if you apply a general purpose fertiliser in spring or summer. At the same time you can also apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost in a layer about 7cm deep around your plants, taking care not to bury the crown.
