The highlights

  • Crisp and flavourful
  • Excellent hardiness
  • Rustle up some okonomiyaki
  • Plant in summer, harvest from autumn

Description

  • Cabbages are incredibly easy to grow, low-maintenance and look highly attractive in the veg plot. 'Tundra F1' is no exception, producing flavoursome white heads in the winter months that can easily withstand a bit of frost
  • We'd definitely say that cabbages are underused by the everyday home cook (and hey, look, we're guilty of it, too). But the fact is that they're perfect for a whole range of recipes, including stir-fries, sautéing in butter and garlic, and making incredible Japanese cabbage fritter pancakes (okonomiyaki)
  • You can plant your cabbages from the early part of summer and they'll be ready to harvest (depending on when you plant them) from the middle of autumn right the way through to spring
  • Once mature, this cabbage can stand in the soil longer than... Than... Well, something that stands for a very long time! We're talking a few months here, and not a piddly few days...
  • An F1 hybrid variety that combines the brilliant flavour of a white cabbage with the cold hardiness of a wrinkled, crinkled savoy
  • Looking for a cabbage with pedigree? This variety has been awarded the RHS' Award of Garden Merit, showcasing its quality of performance in British gardens

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Like all brassicas, winter cabbage can suffer from club root, cabbage root fly, caterpillars, aphids and cabbage whitefly. It's a good idea to cover your cabbage plant(s) with a horticultural fleece to keep off pests and to make sure that your soil drains well and isn't too acidic (this helps prevent club root). If this does occur (signs will include leaves wilting and turning purple, and swollen/bulbous roots below the ground) then you should avoid planting brassicas in that particular bed for the next four years or so. If you find a plant with club root, then unfortunately there's nothing to be done save for ripping it up and either burning it or disposing of it in the landfill bin.

Water regularly

Cabbage plants like moist soil so water your young plants regularly, reducing to a deep watering every week and a half (or so) when they've become established (but only if there's no rain).

Full sun

Plant your cabbage plants somewhere that they'll receive at least 6-8 hours of sunshine per day.

Any neutral or alkaline, moist, well-drained soil

Plant in well-draining soil, adding some lime to raise the soil's pH if it's overly acidic (you're aiming for a pH of above 6).

Feed until hearts form

Apply a fertiliser that's rich in nitrogen until hearts start to form.
