The highlights

  • Sweet, jammy and juicy
  • Incredibly easy to grow
  • Dry to have as a handy and tasty snack
  • Harvest in September

Description

  • In our view, no sunny garden is complete without a proudly growing fig tree, and 'Sultane' is a variety that has every reason to be proud...
  • As fig varieties go, this is one of the more prolific croppers out there, and can be reliably called upon to produce generous quantities of deliciously sweet, purplish-brown figs with ruby-coloured flesh
  • This fig tree can sometimes produce two crops; the main crop (which is also the one you can - and should - rely upon year after year) occurs in the autumn. However, earlier on in the year, it might also produce what's known as a 'breba' crop if the weather conditions are particularly warm and favourable
  • Easy to grow and relatively cold hardy, this medium-sized tree (growing to around 5m) is a lovely option for those wanting to train a fruit tree as a fan up a south-facing wall
  • The deeply-lobed foliage and moreish fruits are highly evocative, instantly transporting you to a sun-soaked Mediterranean hillside (without the risk of lost luggage!)

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Rarely troubled by disease but can be affected by scale insects, spider mites and thrips.

Water regularly

Fig trees benefit from frequent watering, even once they're nice and established. It's especially important that you water your tree during hot, dry weather, or if your fig tree is grown in a container.

Full sun

Plant somewhere that your fig tree will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunshine per day.

Any moist, well-drained soil

Fig trees showcase best growth in soil with good drainage, but that still retains some moisture. They tend to like fertile soil rich in organic matter.

Feed every spring

Apply a high-potassium fertiliser to your fig tree in spring to give it a nice boost going into the growing season. Container-grown figs will also need more regular feeding with a liquid feed.
