The highlights

  • Variegated evergreen foliage
  • Wonderful tropical fragrance
  • Abundant pink flowers from June to August
  • Loved by pollinators like bees

Description

  • Masses of pink, starry, irresistibly scented flowers cover climbing stems and dense foliage throughout the summer
  • The intoxicating, tropical aroma produced by the flowers will waft tantalisingly through your garden from June to August, smelling particularly strong in the evenings and at night
  • Evergreen, variegated foliage (mid green leaves with cream skirting the edges) provides visual interest the whole year round
  • An ideal choice for training up a wall, trellis or pergola, 'Star of Milano' is a self clinging, twining climber, meaning that it doesn't need additional support once it's established
  • Got an ugly shed or boring fence you want to cover, and fast? This star jasmine is your solution, thanks to its vigorous habit which can yield growth of up to 6 feet per year
  • Bees and other pollinators are seduced by this plant's heady fragrance and nectar rich flowers, making it a good fit for wildlife gardens
  • Please Note: Our climbers are pruned back each winter, and some during the summer, so you may find at certain times of year they do not cover the whole 90cm cane. This is intentional to ensure the best growth when you plant out

Habit:

Climbing
Trachelospermum needs little training as it is a self-clinging, twining climber and will cover the space effectively on its own. Young growth will need some guiding and tying-in to supports until it is able to twine and climb. After that, it can be left to scramble upwards, mound up and then arch downwards with a cascade of flowering shoots.

How To Grow

Excellent pest and disease resistance

Generally has few problems with diseases. It can have issues with cushion scale when grown outside as well as mealybugs and glasshouse red spider mites when grown in greenhouses or inside but problems are rarely serious.

Water regularly

Water frequently for the first 12 months after planting. During hotter, drier spells, your plant may require additional watering. If grown in a container, 'Star of Milano' will dry out more quickly and will therefore need watering more often.

Full sun to partial shade

Plant either in full sun or partial shade, in a sheltered spot.

Fertile (or moderately fertile) and well draining soil

Plant 'Star of Milano' in fertile soil with good drainage. It will tolerate slightly acidic soil but prefers a neutral or alkaline pH.

Feed every spring

Feed in the springtime with a well-balanced general purpose fertiliser (like Blood, Fish and Bone). Feeding isn't strictly necessary, particularly if your soil is already fertile. However, an annual feed can help bolster flower growth.
