The highlights

  • Amazing vivid green heads of fractal patterned florets
  • Delicious nutty flavour - like broccoli crossed with cauliflower

  • Grow in a sunny border, raised bed or allotment

Description

  • Is this the coolest vegetable you can grow? Bright, lime green heads packed into tight, fractal patterned florets with a delicious nutty flavour
  • Not just a pretty veg - romanesco is super hardy and versatile, like a cross between a cauliflower and broccoli
  • Grow in borders, allotments and raised beds
  • Great for gourmets, chefs and photographers
  • Plant out after the first frosts and harvest from August to November. Once the main head is cut, the plant will go on producing smaller heads
  • Premium brassica plants grown on a family run farm in Lancashire and sent to you at the best possible time for planting
  • Growing your own gives you healthy, fresh produce with a lower carbon plantprint than anything you can buy from a shop (and when did you last see this in a shop?)

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Like all brassicas, romanesco can suffer from cabbage root fly, club root, caterpillars or whitefly. It is recommended that you cover your brassicas with a garden fleece to prevent them being eaten by pests. To prevent club root ensure that your soil is well draining and not too acidic. Club root is caused by a bacterial infection so if it occurs you should not plant brassicas there again for four years. If you find a plant with club root, burn it with fire to prevent it from spreading to the rest of your garden like some kind of Biblical cabbage plague.

Water regularly

Water your plants deeply - once or twice a week is usually enough, increasing in very hot or dry weather.

Full sun

Grows best in a sheltered spot with full sun, receiving around 6-8 hours of sun every day.

Fertile, well drained soil

Brassicas will grow in fertile, well-drained soil (not acidic). If your soil is very sandy or clay heavy, use a mix of three parts quality compost and one part topsoil. For best results, dig in some manure.

Feed every 1-2 weeks

To get well formed heads, use nitrogen rich organic fertilizers such as worm castings or poultry pellets when you plant them and every month after that.
