The highlights

  • The perfect combo of sweet and tart
  • Yields worth shouting about
  • Make a jelly your roast will be proud of
  • Harvest in July

Description

  • A fabulous mid-season variety, 'Rolan' reliably produces large, grape-like bunches of delicious, shiny-red currants that are simply impossible to resist
  • Pick the berries in July and, if you can stop yourself from scoffing them all on the way back to the kitchen, use them to make jellies, jams and piping hot baked desserts (freezing any surplus that you have left over)
  • Grow your redcurrant plant as either a bush (aiming to prune it in a goblet shape) or trained as a fan or cordon
  • As a self fertile variety, 'Rolan' doesn't require any planting partners in order to fruit successfully
  • The currants are bursting with juice and have a complex flavour profile, combining delicate sweetness with punchy tartness

How To Grow

Excellent pest and disease resistance

Redcurrant plants like 'Rolan' are generally unaffected by pests or disease, but there are a few to look out for. On the pest side of things, watch out for aphids, sawflies and scale insects. In terms of disease, keep an eye out for grey mould, mildew and leaf spot.

Water well when establishing

Redcurrant plants like a good watering when they're newly planted to help them establish. Beyond this, though, they don't really need additional watering, save for especially hot, dry spells.

Full sun to partial shade

Best fruiting will occur when planted in full sun, though you'll still get a decent enough yield of redcurrants when planted in partial shade.

Any moist, well-drained soil

Redcurrant plants grow nicely in a wide range of soil types, provided that drainage is good.

Feed every spring

During the springtime, apply a fertiliser that's high in potassium to encourage greater growth. Container-grown plants will require more regular feeding with a liquid feed (all-purpose in early spring, and then high potassium in summer).
