The highlights

  • Intensely curled, succulent dark green leaves
  • Use young leaves in salads or cook with the larger leaves
  • Perfect for raised beds, borders and large pots
  • Cut and come again - pick what you need from September to February

Description

  • With kale you cannot fail - easy to grow and packed with nutrients, these intensely curled deep green leaves stand well without yellowing throughout the winter
  • Rich and full of flavour - pick the baby leaves for your salads in summer then use the mature leaves in stirfries, curries and soups. Make kale crisps by spraying chopped leaves with oil and baking in the oven
  • Grow in plots, raised beds or large pots - this variety has excellent winter hardiness and is a useful winter vegetable when other crops are scarce
  • You will receive a strip of eight healthy young plants ready to grow on
  • F1 hybrid plants bred for improved vigour, yields and disease resistance
  • Plant out after the first frosts and pick baby leaves or harvest mature from September to February
  • Premium plants grown by vegetable experts on a family run farm in Lancashire and sent to you at the best possible time for planting
  • Growing your own gives you healthy, fresh produce with a lower carbon plantprint than anything you can buy from a shop
  • Easy to grow and care for - simply remove your plants from their strip and pot them on individually until the last chance of frost has passed and they're ready to plant outside. You should see your first kale within 3-6 weeks

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Our vegetable plug plants are bred for good pest and disease resistance, but may still be susceptible to common problems. Kale can be affected by aphids, cabbage root fly, caterpillars or cabbage whitefly. The best defence against all of these is covering your plants in a fine mesh or horticultural fleece, or planting alongside onions and garlic to deter them.

Water regularly

When you first plant your kale plants, give them a good water, then keep the soil consistently moist. Usually until June the UK rain will take care of that, but if there are any dry spells, you should go out and feel the soil. If the soil is dry to the touch, then give the plant some water.

Full sun

Plant in a sunny spot where the plants will receive 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.

Any fertile, well-draining soil

Thrives in any well-drained soil. If your soil is particularly clay-heavy and/or often becomes waterlogged then you can improve the drainage by adding in plenty of organic matter such as garden compost as well as some perlite or gravel.
