How To Grow

Good Pest and Disease Resistance

Winter squashes may be affected by powdery mildew - this fungal white coating on leaves is nothing to be worried about and is very common in all pumpkins and squashes. During the early part of the season, leaves should come through nice and green, and towards the end of the season you start to see powdery mildew creep in. If you do have it earlier in the season, remove affected foliage and keep plants well watered to strengthen them. Any yellow or brown patches forming on the leaves can usually be attributed to a lack of nutrients. Make sure your squash plants are getting enough water so that they can draw up the nutrients that they need – the soil should be consistently moist – and use a liquid feed fortnightly once fruits start forming.

Water Regularly

Squash plants are very thirsty and need to be watered regularly so that the ground is kept consistently moist. During hot, dry spells this will require watering at least once a day. If you notice any discolouration in the leaves they’re probably not getting enough water.

Full sun

Winter Squash plants need 6-8 hours of direct sunlight every day. Best grown in a sheltered position to protect against cold, chilling winds.

Fertile, well-draining soil

A good-mix to use is three parts quality compost to one part topsoil.

Feed fortnightly

Squash are hungry plants so make sure you dig in plenty of organic fertiliser when you plant them and feed fortnightly with a general purpose liquid fertiliser.
