The highlights

  • Patio tree with an upright, bushy habit
  • Small tree - grows up to 1.5m (when pruned)
  • Delicate green leaves (wonderfully aromatic)
  • RHS Plants for Pollinators

Description

  • Like its big brother, the regular bay tree, 'Bay Junior' makes a brilliant little topiary tree. Its evergreen foliage is smaller and more delicate than its sibling, but still retains that wonderful aroma we all know and love.
  • Growing to just a metre or so in height, this diminutive tree is perfect for patios and balconies, requiring just a basic winter trim to keep its neat lollipop shape.
  • For maximum impact, buy a pair of patio bay trees and plant one either side of your front/back door.
  • Pick and use your bay leaves in a range of sumptuous dishes, including French coq au vin, Italian spaghetti Bolognese and Mexican pozole.
  • The bay tree has been certified by the RHS as one of its Plants for Pollinators, a designation bestowed upon those plants proven to benefit pollinating insects like bees and butterflies.

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Generally pest and disease free, but may be susceptible to bay sucker, scale insects and powdery mildews.

Water regularly

Bay trees grown in pots need more water than their ground-grown counterparts. This is especially important during hot, dry spells.

Full sun to partial shade

Grows nicely in both full sun (at least six hours of sunshine per day) and part shade (three to six hours of sunlight each day).

Moist, well-drained compost

Your patio bay tree will benefit from being planted in moist, well-drained compost (something soil-based like John Innes No. 3 works well).

Feed in spring

Give your bay tree an all-purpose liquid fertiliser feed every couple of weeks during the growing season.

Europe

Meet Josh's trusted specialists

Start with a touch of continental sun

Over 99% of our plants are grown in the UK, but where that’s not possible, Josh sources the best specialist growers in Europe for the job. Think citrus warmed by Sicilian sun, topiary trained by Dutch masters, almonds nourished in the Dordogne and bamboo bathed in Tuscan heat. Our handpicked growers nurture these plants to maturity before handing over to our team in the South Downs, to toughen them up for UK gardens.
