Description

  • Think you don’t have the room for a fruit tree at home? Think again. With this patio apple tree, you can grow your own delicious fruit even if space is limited!
  • ‘Braeburn Hillwell’ is a sport (genetic mutation) of ‘Braeburn’, yielding deep red apples with good firmness that store very well
  • ‘Discovery’ is an early season dessert apple with notes of strawberry in its flavour profile and an RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM) to its name
  • ‘Jonagold’ boasts heavy crops of large, blush-coloured eating apples with a crisp, juicy taste and is another variety to hold the RHS’ AGM
  • ‘Sunset’ holds the honour of being our grower’s favourite apple tree – need we say more?
  • Our growers ensure your patio tree has a strong, developed root system and thick main stem before being sent to you. It's been grown on a dwarfing rootstock and pruned to a compact size during its time at the nursery. Plant your tree in a small pot to help stunt growth and prune yearly to help keep the desired shape and size

Rootstock:

M26 dwarfing rootstock
Apple trees grafted onto dwarfing rootstocks (like M26) grow to a much shorter height - roughly 3m - making them ideal for smaller gardens, patios, courtyards and balconies. Patio trees can be kept to an even shorter height with appropriate pruning.
M26 dwarfing rootstock
M26 rootstock apple trees typically only reach a maximum height of 3m (and often shorter), making them a great choice for gardens with more limited space.

How To Grow

Good to average pest and disease resistance

Apple trees can be prone to aphids, caterpillars and moths, as well as issues like canker and scab. Certain varieties, like 'Ecolette' and 'Discovery', are more disease-resistant than others.

Water regularly

Container-grown apple trees require more regular watering than their ground-grown counterparts. In hot, dry weather, daily watering may be needed.

Full sun

Best fruiting will occur in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day).

Any moist, well-drained compost

When planting your patio apple tree, use a compost mix like John Innes No.3.

Feed every spring

Apple trees grown in pots benefit from a springtime feed using a high-potassium fertiliser.
