The highlights

  • Sweet with subtle tartness
  • Neat, compact and ideal for small gardens
  • Rustle up a batch of blueberry muffins
  • Harvest from July to September

Description

  • Blueberries are perhaps the perfect example of "doing what they say on the tin"... Blue? Check. Berries? Also check. Absolutely delicious? Check, check and check!
  • 'Northland' is an American variety known for its cold hardiness (H6 on the RHS scale) and incredible flavour, pairing fresh sweetness with crisp, tart notes
  • Dainty, nodding white blooms are produced in abundance in the springtime, contrasting wonderfully with the plant's rich green foliage. In the autumn months, the leaves take on fiery orange and red shades
  • If your garden has naturally acidic soil, then you can plant this blueberry bush in your beds or borders (if not, then you can acidify the soil using sulphur). Alternatively, it makes a great option for container planting and keeping on the patio
  • Easy to grow and hassle-free, blueberry bushes are a fantastic fruit for beginners to grow
  • Wondering what to do with your bumper blueberry crop? Besides popping them straight in your mouth after picking, you can juice them or whip up a batch of fluffy blueberry muffins

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Blueberries aren't generally affected by pests or disease, though there are a couple of things to watch out for. They can be susceptible (especially when container grown) to vine weevils, so pick these off by hand if you see them and place a sticky barrier around your plant to protect it. Some netting can help prevent birds getting at the fruit, but make sure you choose a material that won't trap the animals.

Water well in summer

Blueberry plants prefer a consistently moist soil, so ensuring that the soil doesn't dry out is imperative. If you're able, use rainwater from a water butt as this has a pH better suited to growing blueberry bushes.

Full sun to partial shade

Plant somewhere that your blueberry bush will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight every day. It will tolerate some shade but best fruiting occurs in full sun.

Any acidic, moist, well-drained soil

Blueberry bushes grow best in acidic soil (roughly between pH 4.5 and 5). Inexpensive testing kits are readily available to ensure your soil is suitable. If your soil isn't acidic enough, then you can work in some sulphur powder.

Feed in winter

Each winter, apply a fertiliser that's high in nitrogen and an early springtime mulch of ericaceous compost (something like composted pine needles works well) that's suitable for acid-loving plants like blueberries.
