The highlights

  • Elegantly spreading tree
  • Medium tree - grows up to 6m
  • Sumptuously-scented, bowl-shaped, pink blooms
  • Wonderfully large flowers (up to 12cm across)

Description

  • With its abundant two-toned flowers, delicate fragrance and lovely spreading habit, ‘Rustic Red’ (or Rustica Rubra to give the variety its Latin name) is a magnolia no garden should be without.
  • This variety boasts blooms with a brighter pink exterior and paler, creamy-pink interior, but don’t let the elegance of the flowers fall you; ‘Rustic Red’ has an RHS hardiness rating of H6, meaning that it can withstand temperatures all the way down to -20°C.
  • Thanks to their sizable nature, you’re not going to miss these flowers either! Each voluminous bloom can measure up to 12cm in diameter, creating a wonderful canvas splashed with perfect pink colour.
  • The emergence of attractive green leaves after the flowers ensures multiple season interest, while the well-branched architecture means that – even when bare – the tree packs a visual punch.
  • Whether you grow it in a shrub-focused border, as a specimen tree at the heart of your lawn or alongside other magnolias, ‘Rustic Red’ is going to steal the show.

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Magnolias can suffer from Coral spot, grey mould and honey fungus. To prevent fungal disease, prune to allow plenty of air to circulate through the branches and allow plenty of space around the tree. MORE

Full Sun to partial shade

This tree loves full sun or partial shade in a sheltered location. Choosing a spot away from strong winds will allow all the tree's resources to go towards growing blossom and protecting its display.

Moist, well-drained soil

Prefers well-draining clay, loam, acid or neutral soils.

Prune in summer

Prune in midsummer when the tree is in full leaf.

Europe

Meet Josh's trusted specialists

Start with a touch of continental sun

Over 99% of our plants are grown in the UK, but where that’s not possible, Josh sources the best specialist growers in Europe for the job. Think citrus warmed by Sicilian sun, topiary trained by Dutch masters, almonds nourished in the Dordogne and bamboo bathed in Tuscan heat. Our handpicked growers nurture these plants to maturity before handing over to our team in the South Downs, to toughen them up for UK gardens.
