How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Slugs and aphids can be a problem for lettuce. To prevent slug damage, keep the area around the lettuces as clean and dry as possible, especially during the night. Use barriers such as crushed egg shells or copper wire.

Water regularly

Water lettuces every couple of days in warm weather, taking care not to splash the leaves.

Full sun to partial shade

Lettuce needs around 6-8 hours of sunlight every day. Partial shade during the hottest parts of the day will help prevent the plant bolting (running to flower and stopping leaf growth).

Rich, well draining soil

A good-mix to use is three parts quality compost to one part topsoil. If you are planting into the ground then make sure you have added plenty of compost, especially if your soil is clay-heavy as the lettuce can rot due to poor drainage.

Feed when planting

Applying a nitrogen-rich feed such as chicken manure pellets will help promote leafy growth resulting in bigger lettuce heads.
