The highlights
- Big flavours come in small packages...
- Heavy-cropping variety
- Reduce with raspberries to make a coulis
- Pick your redcurrants in July and August
Description
- Redcurrants are like little fruiting rubies and, in our view at least, are far more precious!
- 'Laxton's Number One' is an exceptional (and highly traditional) shrub, producing generous strigs of shiny red fruits in the summer that prove impossibly hard to resist - if you can make it back to the house with a trug full of berries, rather than redcurrant juice smeared all around your mouth, we'll be genuinely impressed...
- A late-flowering variety, this variety is also highly regarded for its mildew-resistant properties
- Alongside their undoubted fruiting value, redcurrant bushes also offer great ornamental appeal, their alluring red berries contrasting beautifully with the lush green, lobed deciduous foliage that serves as a backdrop
- The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has certified the redcurrant plant as one of its Plants for Pollinators, so if you want to grow food *and* increase your garden's wildlife presence, then varieties like this one are a great choice!

How To Grow
Excellent pest and disease resistance
Typically untroubled by pests or diseases but there are a few things to watch out for. From a pest perspective, keep an eye out for aphids, sawflies and scale insects. As for disease, your main culprits will be grey mould, mildew and leaf spot.
Water well when establishing
Redcurrants appreciate routine watering when newly planted to help them establish properly. Beyond this, however, they don't really need extra watering, except for in prolonged hot or dry spells.
Full sun to partial shade
For best fruit production, plant in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day). However, you'll still get a semi-decent yield of redcurrants in partial shade.
Any moist, well-drained soil
Grows in most soils provided that some moisture is retained. If your soil is particularly dry or poor, then consider enriching it with some organic matter.
Feed every spring
When spring rolls around, apply a high-potassium fertiliser to keep your plant nice and happy. Redcurrant plants grown in containers will require more frequent liquid feeding (all-purpose in early spring, before moving on to high-potassium in summer).

Best plants you will ever get online
I have ordered plants from them twice this year. They arrived well packaged, on time and looked strong and healthy. I feel the staff from Roots plants deal with their plants and customers with passion and care. I can’t wait to order again, price is good as well.

Satisfied customer
Unlike other online sellers, this company are well ahead in the quality stakes. My plant arrived promptly as per their promise and the plant was much more established and healthy than I had expected. It’s the second time I have ordered from them and I have faith in their promise. Excellent service.

A really good quality tree
A really good quality tree, delivered on time and very well packaged. But the emailed planting advice and supporting information was what really impressed me. Thoroughly recommended.

Exceptional quality
The quality of the plants was exceptional, unlike ones I have had before from local garden centres. Thank you so much. I will definitely be using you again.
