How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Leeks can be affected by slugs and snails, leek moth, onion fly and onion thrips. Possible diseases include leek rust, onion white rot, downy mildews, foot and root rots, fungal leaf spots. Most of these can be prevented by spacing the leeks well so that they have good airflow between them.

Water often in summer

Water your leeks well when they are young and regularly in hot or dry conditions.

Full sun to partial shade

Leeks prefer to be in full sun but can tolerate a bit of light shade. Position them ideally where they will get 6-8 hours of sunlight daily.

Fertile, well drained soil

Leeks will grow in fertile, well-drained soil. If your soil is very sandy or clay heavy, use a mix of three parts quality compost and one part topsoil. For best results, dig in some manure.

Feed when planting

Leek plants will benefit from a feed of good organic fertiliser when they are planted - well rotted manure, chicken manure pellets or worm castings are good. Manure should be dug into the planting soil rather than applied afterwards, to prevent the nitrogen burning the plants.
