The highlights

  • Violet blue racemes 20-25cm long
  • Flowers boast a lovely fragrance
  • Grows well in both sun and part shade
  • Flowers from May to June

Description

  • There's something so very special about a well-established wisteria, trailing its pendulous flower sprays over a wall or pergola and radiating its lovely scent throughout the air. And as far as wisteria varieties go, 'Domino' is one of the very best!
  • This climber produces large, fragrant racemes in a purplish-blue hue during the summer, which contrast wonderfully with the plant's light green, compound pinnate foliage
  • There are several options available to you when it comes to growing your wisteria, but the most usual way is to train it as an espalier against a sunny, south-facing wall
  • Even in winter, when this plant has shed its leaves, the woody stems add fantastic visual and textural interest to any surface they grow on
  • A deserved recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, 'Domino' has been recognised as performing particularly well in British gardens

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Wisteria plants are generally healthy but can occasionally be affected by powdery mildew, scale insects and root rot.

Water regularly when first planted

Water your 'Domino' wisteria well when it's newly planted, especially during prolonged periods of hot and dry weather. After the first couple of years, the plant should establish itself well enough so that it will only needs light watering (if any).

Full sun to partial shade

For best flower production, full sun (six to eight hours of direct sunlight per day) is preferable. However, 'Domino' will still grow nicely in part shade.

Any fertile, moist, well-drained soil

If your soil is particularly heavy or gets waterlogged often, then make sure you mix in plenty of organic matter and perhaps even gravel or perlite to help improve drainage.

Feed every spring

Apply a high-potash fertiliser every year during the springtime. This encourages greater flower production.
