How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Acers are generally healthy, trouble-free plants, but even the healthiest plants aren't immune from the odd issue from time to time. It might, for instance, be susceptible to the odd aphid visit. Fortunately, these can easily be washed off by spraying the problem area with some soapy water.

Water well when establishing

Your acer will benefit from being watered regularly throughout its first growing season. This is especially important in hot conditions. Once established, you'll typically only need to water your tree during dry spells throughout the growing season (spring and summer).

Full sun to partial shade

For the most vivid leaf colour, plant your acer in partial shade (four to six hours of direct sunlight per day).

Any moist, well-drained soil

Best growth will occur when you plant your tree in moisture-retentive soil (but with good drainage).

Feed every February

While feeding isn't strictly necessary, your acer may benefit from a feed using general-purpose fertiliser in late February.
