The highlights

  • Like lemon zest without the bitterness
  • One of the most unusually-shaped fruits!
  • Use for zesting and making syrupy marmalades
  • Fruits most often harvested from late summer

Description

  • There are some pretty unusual-looking fruits out there, but it's safe to say that this citron? Well, it's one of the very weirdest!
  • Named the Hand of Buddha after the fruit's finger-like projections, which remind some people of pictoral depictions of the Buddha, this citrus tree adds unparalleled visual impact to any patio it graces
  • Although often grown for purely ornamental value, the fun-looking fruit can indeed be used for culinary purposes, too. With no fleshy pulp inside, however, it's all about the peel and pith. Candy the peel, zest to make a vinaigrette or create an aromatic syrup infused with the fruit
  • Fruit production is preceded by the development of wonderfully aromatic white flowers, which contrast beautifully with the tree's large, olive green foliage
  • In many Asian cultures, the tree is a symbol of good fortune and happiness - all the more reason to grow one at home!
  • Our potted trees are supplied in EcoPots™. Eco pots use 70% less plastic and are fully recyclable, unlike normal single use pots. They flex and so produce less root spiralling and travel better in the post
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader, if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better shaped tree. This can stop the tree becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

This tree isn't typically impacted by disease but can be affected by certain pests like aphids, spider mites and scale insects.

Water throughout the year

This tree doesn't require too much water in the winter months, preferring to be under- rather than over-watered. However, it still needs watering. Allow the top layer of compost or soil to dry out partially before you water again and use this as your gauge of when to next water. In summer, your tree will require more regular watering, particularly in hot, dry conditions. It will also benefit from daily misting to help emulate the high humidity of its native region.

Full sun

Position this tree somewhere it will receive at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Any well-drained, loam-based soil

Plant in loamy, well-drained soil. Even better is using specialist potting mix, but if you're using a homemade potting mix of soil and compost, them make sure it's got good drainage. If it has poor drainage, amend with some perlite to make it more porous.

Feed regularly

Apply a citrus-specific fertiliser throughout the year, either weekly or fortnightly, depending on the particular product's instructions.
