The highlights

  • Expertly trained into a half-standard shape
  • Includes one of the hardiest varieties
  • Eat fresh, bake with honey or use to make jam
  • Decadent figs, dreamy foliage

Description

  • With their clear trunk and ball-like crown of foliage, half-standard fig trees (often also called lollipop trees) make an eye-catching addition to whichever garden they grace. Perfect for both container planting on a patio and growing in the open ground, your own delectable figs are just a hop, skip and a computer click away…
  • ‘Brown Turkey’ is a true powerhouse of the fig world. Brilliantly suited to the UK climate, highly reliable and yielding succulent, honeyed fruit, the only other thing this tree could do with is an RHS award – oh wait, it has one!
  • To ensure your half-standard tree retains its shape, give it a light prune in summer with a pair of secateurs, trimming back overly zealous shoots to around five or six leaves long, and an additional tidy in winter being recommended if you notice any dead, damaged or congested branches

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Whilst fig trees are typically very healthy plants, they can still experience a couple of issues from time to time, notably spider mites and mealybugs.

Water regularly

Fig trees benefit from regular watering throughout the growing season, particularly when newly planted, grown in a container and during hot, dry weather.

Full sun

Best fruiting will occur when you plant your fig tree in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day).

Any well-drained soil

Fig trees grow best in soil with good drainage and are most productive from a fruiting perspective when their roots are restricted.

Feed every spring

If you're growing your fig tree in the ground, apply a fertiliser that's high in potassium during spring. If you're container-growing your half-standard tree, feed it fortnightly throughout the growing season with a liquid feed.
