The highlights

  • Enjoys full sun and partial shade
  • Train up a wall, fence, pergola or trellis
  • Blooms from June to September
  • RHS Award of Garden Merit winner

Description

  • Whorls of sumptuously scented, trumpet shaped flowers delicately perfume the garden throughout the summer months
  • The flowers emerge from deep pink buds, and comprise two lips (forming the distinctive tubular shape). Their exterior is an alluring shade of magenta, whilst within the petals are a fiery amber colour
  • Semi evergreen in nature, 'Gold Flame' will retain its attractive mid green foliage in milder climes and more sheltered locations, and even when the foliage does fall in colder winters, it quickly reappears in spring
  • The flowers are sometimes succeeded in late summer and into autumn by vibrant red, ornamental berries
  • This climbing honeysuckle is perfect for training up a wall, fence, trellis or pergola - it's worth noting that this variety will need to be tied to its vertical support structure using garden twine
  • Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit
  • Please Note: Our climbers are pruned back each winter, and some during the summer, so you may find at certain times of year they do not cover the whole 90cm cane. This is intentional to ensure the best growth when you plant out

How To Grow

Excellent pest and disease resistance

If honeysuckle aphids appear, wipe them off and spray the leaves with soapy water. Spring feeding will help to prevent powdery mildew.

Water regularly when establishing

Water your climbing honeysuckle well during its first growing season to help it establish. Once established, only an occasional deep watering will be needed during drier spells. If your plant is trained up a wall, its soil might not get rained on (known as a rain shadow effect), so it's worth making sure that the soil doesn't dry out, even when it's recently rained.

Full sun to partial shade

Lonicera heckrottii will be happy in both full sun and in more partially shaded positions. Avoid overly strong sunlight as this can scorch your plant.

Fertile, moist and well drained soil

This plant will grow well in any soil type provided it's fertile, rich in humus, moist and drains well. Consider adding compost to the soil if drainage is poor.

Feed every spring

Feed with a general purpose fertiliser (like Blood, Fish and Bone) and mulch in Spring to help reduce the risk of powdery mildew.
