The highlights

  • Purple raspberries with a sweet, tangy taste
  • Thornless stems for easy picking
  • Makes for stunning crumble and divine wine
  • Harvest from June through to August

Description

  • What do you get when you cross a black raspberry with red raspberry? A purple raspberry, of course! This hybrid variety produces wonderfully flavourful purple-fleshed fruit in the middle of summer. The raspberries boast an exceptional flavour profile, combining irresistible sweetness with a refreshing tanginess
  • Unlike many raspberry varieties, 'Glen coe' bushes comprise thornless stems (often also called canes) which means that, when it comes to picking your fruit, you won't need a supply of sticking plasters on standby ready to tend to your cuts and scratches...
  • When people think of raspberry plants, they (understandably) tend to first think of the moreish fruit the canes provide, but 'Glencoe' produces wonderful little white flowers, too!
  • Given its relatively compact, bushy nature, this raspberry variety is a great choice for growing in a container on your patio
  • There are two types of raspberry, summer bearing and everbearing - this variety is a summer bearing variety which produces fruit on the previous year's canes, rather than on the current year's growth
  • Rubus idaeus (of which 'Glencoe' is a variety) has been certified by the RHS as one of its Plants for Pollinators; bees love, love, love raspberry plants, and, really, who can blame them?

How To Grow

Excellent pest and disease resistance

A typically trouble-free plant!

Water regularly

Raspberry plants are pretty thirsty and appreciate their soil be kept consistently moist; water them regularly throughout the growing season, and especially when the weather is hot and dry. Container-grown raspberry plants need even more regular watering. When watering your plant, aim to water at the base, keeping the foliage, flowers and fruit dry if possible (this decreases the risk of disease cropping up).

Full sun to partial shade

Best fruiting will occur when planted somewhere that your raspberry plant will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Any fertile, moist, well-drained soil

Raspberry plants tend to grow nicely in a range of soils, provided that it's moist and free-draining, but if possible, they prefer to be planted in slightly acidic soil.

Feed every spring

Apply a high-potassium fertiliser to raspberry plants in the ground every springtime, and use a liquid feed as per the manufacturer's instructions if growing your 'Glencoe' raspberry plant in a pot.
