The highlights

  • Proud upright stems, arching over time
  • Grows up to 4m high (can be kept shorter)
  • Blue-green, thin, evergreen leaves (clumping)
  • Incredible contrast between foliage and culms

Description

  • If you're after a non-invasive, clumping bamboo, then this variety is the one you're after. With its upright, glossy stems shimmering in hues somewhere between midnight purple and obsidian black, 'Black Pearl' is vigorous yet elegant, impactful but easygoing.
  • The dramatic culms (which grow to a maximum height of around four metres) contrast brilliantly with the bluish-green, lanceolate foliage, with each delicate leaf growing to just under 10cm in length. Don't worry if you're limited on space, either, because this cultivar can easily be pruned smaller.
  • Evergreen in nature, this plant works brilliantly as a screening plant for privacy, or for added winter interest when the garden is otherwise slumbering throughout the winter months. You can even grow your 'Black Pearl' bamboo in a large container, provided that you keep the compost consistently moist.
  • An excellent choice for Japanese-style planting schemes, plant your bamboo alongside other foliage plants like ferns, hakonechloas (Japanese forest grasses) and hostas. This variety is also a good pick for sensory gardens, thanks to its tactile nature and the rustling sound that the foliage and canes produce as they sway in the wind.
  • A hardy plant, you won't have to worry about your bamboo in the winter, as it will easily withstand what the colder months can throw at it.

How To Grow

Water regularly

Bamboo plants need regular watering, particularly when establishing and during hot, dry spells.

Feed in spring

While bamboo plants can get away without additional feeding when planted in fertile soil, those plants grown in poor soil will appreciate a springtime feed with general fertiliser, while container-grown bamboo plants should be fed with liquid feed throughout the growing season.

Meet Josh's trusted specialists

Start with a touch of continental sun

Over 99% of our plants are grown in the UK, but where that’s not possible, Josh sources the best specialist growers in Europe for the job. Think citrus warmed by Sicilian sun, topiary trained by Dutch masters, almonds nourished in the Dordogne and bamboo bathed in Tuscan heat. Our handpicked growers nurture these plants to maturity before handing over to our team in the South Downs, to toughen them up for UK gardens.
