The highlights

  • Carefully trained into a fan shape
  • Includes award-winning varieties
  • Bake in a pie or make your own conserve
  • Ambrosial plums, amazing flowers

Description

  • A fan-trained plum tree is truly a sight to behold. Branches beautifully arranged against a wall or wire trellis, bearing wonderful blossom and utterly delicious fruit, this is undoubtedly one of our favourite ways to grow a fruit tree
  • ‘Victoria’ is the classic British plum variety, yielding incredibly tasty, sweet fruit that’s perfect for both eating fresh and using in desserts – plus, it’s a recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit!
  • Training and pruning your fan tree is important to help keep its shape and ensure it stays nice and productive. Tie in new side shoots to your framework each summer, and remove congested, diseased or damaged branches. Cut away any branches pointed in towards your fence or wall, and cut back any branches pointing directly outwards back to roughly three leaves beyond the basal cluster

Variety dependent

Pollination group:

Varies from variety to variety

Eating fresh, jam-making, desserts and baking

Rootstock:

St. Julien A rootstock
Plum varieties are usually grown by grafting them to rootstocks. This has benefits for pest resistance, genetics and the efficiency of propagation. Importantly, it also limits the height of a tree to a more manageable, specific height. SJA plum trees tend to only reach 4m tall, perfect for smaller spaces or those afraid of stepladders. They can also be trained to a smaller size by pruning or restricting the roots, by keeping in a smaller pot

Spacing:

4-5m
Plant 4-5m apart to allow for spreading.

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Though typically hale and hearty, plum trees can occasionally be affected by aphids, caterpillars, canker and wilt.

Water well when establishing

Once your plum tree is established, it won't need much additional watering except for in hot, dry spells. Throughout its first growing season, however, more regular watering is needed.

Full sun

Fan plum trees are most productive when planted in a sunny position (like a south-facing wall) where they'll receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Any moist, fertile, well-drained soil

Plum trees prefer moist (but not waterlogged) soil with ample drainage - they also typically prefer slightly acidic soil.

Feed every winter

Plum trees, however they're trained, benefit from feeding in winter with a fertiliser that's high in potassium
