The highlights

  • Rich blueberries, both sweet and juicy
  • Berries bursting with minerals and vitamins
  • Eat fresh or blitz in morning smoothies
  • Pick from July to August

Description

  • An excellent mid-season cultivar, 'Draper' produces excellent blueberries in the heart of summer and wonderfully charming, bell-shaped blooms during spring
  • If you've got a glut of blueberries, then you'll most likely want to freeze some of the surplus; 'Draper' blueberries have great firmness, which is exactly what you're looking for when it comes to fruit that freezes well
  • One of the Royal Horticultural Society's Plants for Pollinators, this blueberry plant will help attract more bees to your outdoor space
  • You might be thinking of getting a blueberry bush for the fruit, but they provide excellent ornamental value, too! In the autumn months, the previously green foliage takes on blazing red hues, adding great drama and visual interest
  • 'Draper' blueberries are large and incredibly moreish; eat them fresh, dry them as a tasty snack or work them through your next batch of muffin batter
  • Blueberries are chock full of antioxidants which help stave off chronic illnesses; because of this, they're often referred to as a superfood - tasty *and* healthy? Say no more!

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Can be impacted by root rot, powdery mildew and vine weevils.

Water well in summer

Blueberry bushes typically prefer soil that's consistently moist; it's important, therefore, that you ensure your soil doesn't dry out. If you're able, use rainwater that's been collected in a storage butt as this has a pH more appropriate to growing blueberry plants.

Full sun to partial shade

This blueberry variety will grow in partial shade, however best fruiting will occur in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day).

Any acidic, moist, well-drained soil

Blueberries grow best in acidic soil. Either grow your bush in a large pot where you can easily control the soil/compost conditions, or test your flower bed's pH using a soil testing kit. If it isn't acidic enough, then you can add a bit of sulphur to the soil.

Feed in winter

Each winter, it's worth applying a fertiliser that's rich in nitrogen. After this, in the early springtime, apply a good mulch of ericaceous compost (ericaceous means the compost is well-suited to acid-loving plants like blueberries).
