The highlights

  • Alluring, single, cross-shaped blooms
  • Pruning group 3 - loves a prune
  • Full sun to partial shade, fully hardy (H6)
  • Flowers July to September

Description

  • 'Romantika' is a vigorous climbing clematis which produces an abundance of highly-impressive, single flowers throughout summer into early autumn
  • This plant is all about contrast - cordate, mid green leaves are juxtaposed beautifully against the intensely purple, showy blooms. These themselves feature an element of striking contrast, with bright, lemon yellow anthers protruding from the centre of each flower once opened
  • This much-loved hybrid variety was originally bred in the 1980s by Uno Kivistik, a pioneering Estonian clematis breeder who named well over 100 different hybrid varieties during the course of his life
  • A fully hardy plant, this clematis is one seriously tough cookie and will withstand temperatures down to -20°C
  • Pruning group 3 - prune hard (cutting to a healthy bud 30cm from the ground) in February or March
  • Please Note: Our climbers are pruned back each winter, and some during the summer, so you may find at certain times of year they do not cover the whole 90cm cane. This is intentional to ensure the best growth when you plant out

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Can occasionally be affected by aphids - if you spot them, they can be wiped off with a damp cloth and the affected area sprayed with soapy water to prevent a recurrence. Clematis wilt can be avoided by ensuring your plants have the correct balance of nutrients. Dig in plenty of compost when planting, and mulch around the plant in the autumn.

Water Regularly At First

Water frequently when your plant is newly planted and getting established. After that, water during drier spells and make sure never to let the soil dry out.

Full sun to partial shade

Clematis vines like full sun, aiming for at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Their roots and base, by contrast, prefer shady conditions to keep cool - use gravel, mulch, ground cover plants or a shade cloth to achieve this.

Any moist, well-drained soil

Clematis will grow well in any soil type providing it is moist and well drained. If your soil is heavy or clay-based, mix in some fine gravel or perlite when planting, to help with drainage.

Feed every spring

Feed at least once annually, and up to 2-3 times a year, with potassium rich fertiliser or rose feed to encourage better flower growth.
