How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Our vegetable plug plants are bred for good pest and disease resistance, but may still be susceptible to common problems. Carrot root fly is the most common and serious carrot threat. To prevent it you can cover your carrot plants in a horticultural fleece to prevent the flies laying eggs near the plants. You can also plant onions or garlic chives near your carrot plants to confuse and deter them!

Water in dry weather

Carrots are drought resistant, but during very hot, dry spells you may have to water up to twice a day. Water them in well when newly planted.

Full sun

Carrots plants do best in full sun. Position them somewhere where they’ll receive 6-8 hours of direct sunlight every day.

Sandy soil

Carrots need sandy, well-draining, fertile soil. Most garden soils will be too heavy to grow carrots and so it is best to grow carrots with lots of garden compost and sand at least 20cm deep at about 50% soil to 50% sand.

Feeding not required

No feeding needed, but you can work in some well rotted manure before planting or use it as a mulch around the plants to improve the soil's nutrient content.
