The highlights

  • Upright and bushy habit
  • Small shrub - grows up to 2.5m
  • Pinkish-red double blooms, evergreen foliage
  • A prolific flowerer

Description

  • Abundant red, rose-like flowers are the order of the day as far as Camellia japonica 'Lady Campbell' is concerned. Peppered across a glossy evergreen backdrop, the luxurious blooms emerge from January through to March, brightening even the gloomiest of grey skies.
  • Growing to just a couple of metres or so in height, this compact, upright shrub makes an excellent accent plant for a bed or border, and can also be grown in a large patio pot (using ericaceous compost).
  • Originally woodland plants in their native Japan, camellias grow well in partial or dappled shade, and look fabulous when planted alongside heucheras, hostas and other foliage plants.
  • This plant is low-maintenance and easy to care for, requiring only the odd prune here or there to keep to its allotted space.
  • The early flowers and evergreen foliage ensures genuine year-round interest, helping keep your garden looking nice and healthy when little else is going on, growing-wise.

How To Grow

Average pest and disease resistance

Can occasionally be susceptible to aphids, vine weevils, viruses and petal blight.

Water well when establishing

Keep your camellia well-watered throughout the first couple of growing seasons to help it establish, and during hot, dry spells.

Partial shade

Best growth will occur in dappled shade, sheltered from early morning sun.

Acidic or neutral, moist, well-drained soil

Camellias are ericaceous plants, and so prefer a fertile, well-drained soil that skews on the acidic side.

Feed in spring

An application of ericaceous fertiliser in early spring will help give your camellia a boost throughout the growing season.

Meet Josh's trusted specialists

Start with a touch of continental sun

Over 99% of our plants are grown in the UK, but where that’s not possible, Josh sources the best specialist growers in Europe for the job. Think citrus warmed by Sicilian sun, topiary trained by Dutch masters, almonds nourished in the Dordogne and bamboo bathed in Tuscan heat. Our handpicked growers nurture these plants to maturity before handing over to our team in the South Downs, to toughen them up for UK gardens.
