How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Like all brassicas, broccoli can suffer from cabbage root fly, club root, caterpillars or whitefly. It is recommended that you cover your brassicas with a garden fleece to prevent them being eaten by pests. To prevent club root ensure that your soil is well draining and not too acidic. Club root is caused by a bacterial infection so if it occurs you should not plant brassicas there again for four years. If you find a plant with club root, burn it with fire to prevent it from spreading to the rest of your garden like some kind of Biblical cabbage plague.

Water regularly

Water your plants deeply - once or twice a week is usually enough, increasing in very hot or dry weather.

Full sun

Grows best in a sheltered spot with full sun, receiving around 6-8 hours of sun every day.

Any fertile, well-draining soil

Thrives in any well-drained soil. If your soil is particularly clay-heavy and/or often becomes waterlogged then you can improve the drainage by adding in plenty of organic matter such as garden compost as well as some perlite or gravel.

Feed every 1-2 weeks

To get well formed heads, use nitrogen rich organic fertilizers such as worm castings or poultry pellets when you plant them and every month after that.
