The highlights

  • Sweet with delicate tart notes
  • Ideal for freezing
  • Use in smoothies or baked into pies
  • Pick your berries from July to August

Description

  • An exceptional blueberry variety, 'Brigitta' produces scrummy fruits whose firm skins make them absolutely perfect for storing in the freezer; great-tasting blueberries the whole year round *and* with reduced waste! What's not to like?
  • Blueberry bushes offer brilliant colour across three seasons. Delightful, bell-shaped white blooms appear in spring, followed by dusky blue fruits ready for picking at the end of summer. In autumn, the lush green foliage undergoes a flame-inspired transformation, taking on fiery red and orange hues
  • This is a great planting choice for gardeners wanting to attract pollinators to their garden, as bees are reliably drawn to the bush's pollen-rich flowers (the blueberry has, in fact, been certified by the RHS as one of its Plants for Pollinators)
  • Blueberries are regarded as a superfood, thanks to their high levels of antioxidants (these help the body stave off chronic diseases)
  • Need a recipe suggestion? You can't go wrong with a piping-hot blackberry pie (complete with a lattice pastry covering, of course) served with vanilla ice cream or thick custard!

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Not regularly troubled by pests or disease, although it can be affected by powdery mildews, root rot and vine weevils.

Water well in summer

Blueberry bushes prefer soil that's kept consistently moist, so it's important that you ensure its soil doesn't dry out. If you can, use rainwater collected in a storage butt as this has a pH that's more appropriately suited to growing blueberry plants.

Full sun to partial shade

Although this variety will grow in partial shade, best fruiting will occur in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day).

Any acidic, moist, well-drained soil

Blueberry bushes typically grow best in acidic soil (with a pH roughly between 4.5 and 5). Soil testing kits are available online and in garden centres to ensure your soil is suitably acidic. If it isn't acidic enough, then you can incorporate some sulphur powder.

Feed in winter

Each winter, apply a nitrogen-rich fertiliser. After this, in early springtime, apply a generous mulch of ericaceous compost that's well-suited to acid-loving plants like blueberries.
