The highlights

  • Sharp tartness, mellows when cooked (cooking)
  • Perfect for smaller gardens
  • Cook down to a sauce or bake in desserts
  • Harvest from October

Description

  • Widely regarded as being amongst the very best cooking apples, this variety's green fruits have a real bite and tartness when raw, which softens beautifully when cooked into sauces, chutneys and baked into desserts
  • This variety is named as such because it's 20% less vigorous than 'Bramley's Seedling', making it more manageable for smaller gardens, whilst at the same time still producing excellent yields of wonderful cooking apples. If you're limited on space but want your very own fruit tree, then this is an excellent option
  • This tree isn't self-fertile and will therefore require a pollination partner(s) - see the notes below for more details
  • These apples have a brilliant keeping period, and will store well on an apple rack (which helps provide optimal air circulation around the fruits) from November all the way through to March
  • Certified by the RHS as one of its Plants for Pollinators, the humble apple tree will help bring bees, birds and butterflies to your garden like never before!
  • M26 rootstock, max size - 3x3m
  • Our potted trees are supplied in EcoPots™. Eco pots use 70% less plastic and are fully recyclable, unlike normal single use pots. They flex and so produce less root spiralling and travel better in the post
  • Our trees are usually between 18 and 36 months old at the time of dispatch
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader, if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better shaped tree. This can stop the tree becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth

What To Expect

Supplied as:

Potted tree
2 year old semi dwarfing tree in a 9L pot

Height on arrival:

120-150cm

Eventual height:

3m

Eventual spread:

3m
Spreads approximately 3m.

Tasting notes:

Sharp tartness that mellows when cooked

Time to first crop:

1-2 years
You may see your first apples in the first or second year after planting, but don't expect substantial yields until the third or fourth year. Some horticulturalists advise thinning the fruit in the first few years so that the tree can concentrate its energy on establishing strong roots.

Flower colour:

Pale pink
Delicate pinkish blossom appears in March and April

Habit:

Bushy
With the M26 rootstock, this variety grows into a neat, compact and bushy tree.

Hardiness:

Fully hardy
H6 - This apple variety is cold hardy down to temperatures of -20°C.

Self fertile:

Not self fertile
This apple tree requires a pollination partner nearby (preferably within 30 metres) that flowers at roughly the same time (an apple tree from pollinator groups 2, 3 or 4). Because it's a triploid variety, either one self-fertile variety is needed as the pollination partner or two self-sterile trees.

Pollination group:

3
Pollination groups relate to the time of the year when a tree flowers. Trees that flower at the same time can pollinate each other, which helps produce fruit if not self fertile, and can still improve yields even if they are. Trees can usually pollinate a group either side of their own; i.e "2" can Pollinate 1, 2, and 3

Uses:

Culinary; baking in pies and crumbles, cooking down to a sauce, making cider

Rootstock:

M26 rootstock (grows up to 3m)
M26 apple trees typically only reach 3m tall, making them perfect for smaller spaces (or those afraid of stepladders).

Spacing:

4-5m
Plant 4-5m apart to allow for spreading.

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Although this variety has solid resistance to certain diseases like canker and mildew, it can still be affected by the following: apple scab, fireblight and honey fungus. From a pest perspective, it can be impacted by aphids, spider mites and caterpillars.

Water in well when planting

Give your tree a good water when planting, and then water it regularly throughout its first season. Watering aids can be purchased to help with this establishing process, including slow-release watering bags. Once established, your tree won't need watering save for prolonged hot, dry spells.

Full sun

For best fruit production, at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day is required.

Any loamy, moist, well-drained soil

Requires soil with good drainage but that still retains some moisture; it prefers a neutral, loamy soil rather than shallow chalky or sandy soils (it's possible to grow apple trees in the latter two types but it's more difficult).

Feed every spring

Whether you're growing your apple tree in the ground or a container, it will need feeding in spring. Use a fertiliser that's high in potassium (eg. 0-0-22 NPK) and apply in March for ground-grown trees, and April for container-grown trees.
