The highlights

  • Firm and juicy (dual - but primarily cooking)
  • Ideal for espalier training
  • Bake into pies or savour fresh from the tree
  • Harvest from September (stores to November)

Description

  • A very versatile dual purpose apple, used mainly for cooking but also good to eat fresh
  • Mostly green with a red blush that develops when they're ripe for picking
  • Suitable to train on wires and as cordons or espaliers
  • First bred in the 1960s from Cox's Orange Pippin and Lane's Prince Albert
  • Sharp and juicy when eaten fresh, holds shape well when cooked
  • Naturally compact form makes it ideal for growing in the average garden
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader, if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better shaped tree. This can stop the tree becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth.MORE

Time to first crop:

You may see your first apples the first year after planting, but don't expect substantial crops until the 3rd/4th year. Some advise thinning the fruit in the first few years so that the tree can concentrate its energy on establishing strong roots and growing.

Pollination group:

Pollination Group 2
Requires pollination by another apple tree within a mile's radius. They need to flower at the same time. Apples in the same pollination group, or one either side, can pollinate each other. In built up areas it is unlikely that there won't be a suitable pollination partner within a mile

Rootstock:

M26 rootstock (grows up to 3m)
M26 rootstock (grows up to 3m)
Apple tree varieties are usually grown by grafting them to rootstocks. This has benefits for pest resistance, genetics and the efficiency of propagation. Importantly, it also limits the height of a tree to a more manageable, specific height. M26 apple trees tend to only reach 3m tall, perfect for smaller spaces or those afraid of stepladders.

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Pest and disease resistance is above average and if mildew is a problem in your garden then Bountiful has a high resistance level.MORE

Full sun

Plant where the tree will receive around 6-8 hours of sunlight daily in spring/summer.

Happy in most soils

Prefers fertile well draining soil, can also tolerate clay soil but you will need to take some steps to improve drainage in the winter.

Some structural pruning required

Some pruning should be done each winter to ensure that your apple tree maintains a productive shape. This can improve yields and prevent disease.
