The highlights

  • Spreading bamboo canes
  • Grows up to 6m (can be kept shorter)
  • Evergreen leaves, khaki green culms (running)
  • RHS Award of Garden Merit winner

Description

  • Arrow bamboo (also known as metake) is an exceptional variety, producing upright green culms which spread somewhat with age. This vigorous grower can reach six metres in height, though it can easily be pruned to fit smaller spaces.
  • An evergreen plant, arrow bamboo is perfect for those gardens in search for greater year-round interest. The large green leaves can reach almost 30cm in length, while the canes boast an appealing khaki or olive hue.
  • Amongst the most shade-tolerant of bamboos, this variety is an excellent options for those gardens not fortunate enough to be blessed with countless hours of sunshine each day.
  • Some say the bamboo is named as such because Japanese samurai used to use the plant's strong, stiff culms to create arrow shafts. An alternative theory is that it's the plant's foliage that earned it the name, the long leaves culminating in a point just like an arrowhead.
  • Pseudosasa japonica has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (AGM) in recognition of its stellar performance in British gardens.

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Rarely affected by diseases but can experience problems with slugs.

Water regularly

Bamboo plants need regular watering, particularly when establishing and during hot, dry spells.

Full sun to partial shade

Pseudosasa bamboos are among the most shade-tolerant bamboos, and will typically grow best in a partially shaded spot.

Any moist, well-drained soil

Bamboo plants grow best in rich soil that drains well but retains a bit of moisture. So long as your soil isn't waterlogged or severely dry, though, your plant should grow nicely.

Feed in spring

While bamboo plants can get away without additional feeding when planted in fertile soil, those plants grown in poor soil will appreciate a springtime feed with general fertiliser, while container-grown bamboo plants should be fed with liquid feed throughout the growing season.
