The highlights

  • Vase-shaped, but gently spreading over time
  • Easily pruned to fit average sized gardens
  • Clusters of double pink flowers
  • Blossoms in March-May

Description

  • One of the best blossom displays of any variety - and that's not all. Kanzan's classical form and colours bring year-round interest to your garden
  • Clusters of lush, double pink flowers cover the branches between March and May
  • The foliage emerges bronzed in the spring, matures to a dark green and puts on a spectacular display in autumn, with leaves taking on a palette of warm oranges, fiery reds and golden yellows
  • Growing to 8m but easily pruned to fit a smaller space, Kanzan is suitable for most average sized gardens and has a naturally vase-shaped form
  • A hardy tree that will thrive in all but chalky soils - grow in a sunny sheltered spot for the best flowers
  • Native to Japan, Kanzan was first bred in the Edo period (1603-1867) and named for the legendary Chinese poet and sage Hanshan (Kanzan-ji in Japanese)
  • Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit
  • Our potted trees are supplied in EcoPots™. Eco pots use 70% less plastic and are fully recyclable, unlike normal single-use pots. They flex and so produce less root spiralling and travel better in the post.MORE
  • Our trees are usually between 18 and 36 months old at the time of dispatch.
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better-shaped tree. This can stop the tree from becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth.MORE

What To Expect

Supplied as:

Bare Root
Our trees are supplied as “bare roots” meaning that the roots of the trees are established below the ground but not actively growing (dormant) between November and March. As bare roots are stored without any soil or pot, they easily settle themselves when in contact with soil in your garden. Don't panic if your tree is not showing any sign of growth above the ground come April, as it's still in the dormant phase.
9L Eco Pot
This tree is supplied in a 9L Eco Pot, which is approx D15 x H30cm. Eco Pots use 70% less plastic then traditional pots and can be recycled easily. A 9L pot allows ample space for good root development and can support a good size tree.

How To Grow

Average Pest/ Disease Resistance

May need protection from caterpillars, leaf-mining moths and bullfinches and be affected by silver leaf, bacterial canker and blossom wilt.MORE

A little watering when new

When newly planted, the trees would love a little watering at least once a month for the initial couple of months. Afterwards keep moist but well drained.

Full sun

This cherry tree loves full sun exposure and a sheltered location. Choosing a spot away from strong winds helps the tree direct its resources towards growing more blossom and protects the petals.

Happy in any moist and well drained soil except for chalk

Adapts to clay, loam and sandy soil

Prune annually

Pruning in mid-summer may be required if affected by silver leaf
