The highlights

  • Nutty, mild and slightly sweet
  • Compact growth habit
  • Slice and make cauliflower steaks
  • Plant from spring, harvest from summer

Description

  • 'Tirza' is a biblical name meaning 'delight' and we don't think this cauliflower variety could be any better named!
  • An early cropper, this variety is best planted in the spring to give you harvestable curds from the beginning of summer (however, you can also continue planting beyond spring; if planting in autumn, overwinter your cauliflower in a cold frame)
  • A great veg to help get kids growing, use your harvested cauliflowers to make a creamy cauliflower cheese dish, roast them whole with cumin and turmeric, or bread the florets and whack them in the air fryer (the world really is your brassica-flavoured oyster)
  • Flavour wise, 'Tirza' cauliflowers have an excellent, mellow nuttiness paired with subtle, sweet undertones
  • Tragically, most of us don't have access to XL allotments and instead have to work with the space we've got - whether that be a small courtyard garden, power washed patio or sunny city balcony. Fortunately, thanks to its compact nature, this variety is perfect for container growing, so you can grow cauliflowers to your heart's content, no matter how limited you are on space!
  • 'Tirza' has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, demonstrating its stellar performance in British gardens

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

As with all brassicas, cauliflowers can suffer from club root, cabbage root fly, caterpillars, aphids and cabbage whitefly. It's advisable to cover your cauliflower plant(s) with a netting to keep off pests, and to make sure that your soil drains well and isn't too acidic (this will help prevent club root). If club root does occur (signs of which will include leaves wilting and turning purple, and swollen, bulbous roots below the ground) then you should avoid planting any more brassicas in that particular bed for the next four years, or so. If you find a plant with club root, then unfortunately there's nothing to be done and you'll have to rip it up and either dispose of it in the landfill bin or burni it.

Water regularly

Cauliflower plants like moist soil so water your young plants regularly, reducing to a once weekly watering when they're all nice and established.

Full sun

Plant your 'Tirza' cauliflower plants somewhere that they'll receive at least 6 hours of sunshine per day.

Any neutral or alkaline, moist, well-drained soil

Plant your cauliflower plants in soil with good drainage but which retains some moisture. Cauliflower plants don't like overly acidic soil, so make sure your soil's pH is at least 6.5 (if it's below this, add some lime).

Feed before curds form

Prior to curds forming, apply a fertiliser that's high in nitrogen.
