The highlights

  • Prefers full sun but grows in partial shade
  • Incredibly floriferous
  • Blooms appear from June through to October
  • RHS Plants for Pollinators

Description

  • One of the cheeriest rudbeckias you'll ever meet, the flowers of 'Lemon SmileyZ' offer a shot of turbocharged positivity straight into your horticultural veins (okay, not literally, but you get the point...)
  • Canary yellow petals with a honey-coloured halo surround a yellow-green central cone (in other words, it's a plant with a whole lotta yellow!)
  • Laughably easy to grow and long-flowering, this is an excellent choice for beginner gardeners whose fingers aren't perhaps the full viridian shade of green just yet
  • Plant alongside other rudbeckias in shades of red and orange and watch as your border is transformed from a bland patch of soil into an explosive patchwork of cheerful colours
  • What's all the buzz about? This plant, that's what! Rudbeckias are recognised by the RHS as one of its Plants for Pollinators, so you can rely on varieties like 'Lemon SmileyZ' to readily encourage bees to your garden

How To Grow

Excellent pest and disease resistance

Doesn't typically experience problems

Water well in summer

Water your rudbeckia well throughout the summer when conditions are hot and dry. Your goal is to keep the soil moist, so if there's been a lot of rainfall in the summer (which, let's be honest, wouldn't be a surprise here in the UK) then additional watering might not be needed. Container-grown rudbeckias will need more frequent watering than those planted in the open ground.

Full sun to partial shade

This rudbeckia cultivar does best in full sun (with at least 6 hours per day being preferable) but will still grow well in a part shaded position.

Any moist, well-drained soil

This variety grows nicely in most soil types, but prefers conditions that are a little heavier if possible. So, if your soil drains freely and you notice that it often dries out, then consider adding some compost or mulch as this will help it retain moisture better.

No feeding required

Additional fertilisation isn't necessary unless your soil is seriously poor; an annual mulch with something like garden compost in the spring is all your rudbeckia needs.
