The highlights

  • Large and juicy with excellent flavour
  • Can be grown without support
  • Eat fresh or whack into a crumble...
  • Harvest your blackberries in July and August

Description

  • You know what we'd like here at Roots? *Not* to have our arms shredded to pieces any time we try and pick a blackberry - that's the dream, right?
  • Well dream no longer, because 'Loch Maree' is a variety that produces easily accessible fruit on spineless stems, making for simple (and painless) pickings!
  • Unlike many trailing blackberry varieties, which require support, this plant features semi-erect stems that don't require training or support (though, of course, you still can if you want to)
  • The fruit, which is sweet and utterly delicious, isn't the sole star of the show as far as this variety is concerned. In early summer, stunning double, blush-pink flowers appear, giving the plant great ornamental value alongside its fruiting prowess
  • Fully hardy and easy to grow, this variety is a must-have for any soft fruit lover

How To Grow

Excellent pest and disease resistance

Not regularly impacted by pests or disease. Your big challenge with this variety might well be keeping the birds from getting at your wonderful produce! Using horticultural netting can help with this, just make sure that you choose a material that won't risk entrapping the animals.

Water well when establishing

During the first year after planting, as your plant establishes, it will benefit from regular watering, especially when the weather is hot and dry (aim to water once per week in these conditions during the first year). After that, however, once your plant is established, additional watering will only usually be needed in prolonged dry spells (once every couple of weeks should be fine in these instances).

Full sun to partial shade

For best fruiting, plant in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day). It will still grow nicely in partial shade, too, however.

Any moist, well-drained soil

Blackberry plants will grow well in most soil provided that it's moist and drains well. Working in some organic matter will help free-draining soil retain moisture better, and heavier soils drain better.

Feed every spring

During the springtime, consider an application fertiliser with a high potassium content just to give your plant a bit of a boost.
