How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Wallflowers have generally good pest and disease resistance but can have issues with slugs and snails when young. Keep the area around the plant debris free and as dry as possible, especially at night as slugs and snails love damp conditions. You can use barriers such as crushed egg shells, grit or copper wire to surround the plant - these will prevent slugs and snails from reaching the leaves. To prevent downy mildew, space the plants adequately to prevent overcrowding and tight, humid conditions. Water at the base into the soil, not on the leaves, and try to prevent the water splashing off the soil and onto the leaves.

Full sun

Wallflowers prefer a sunny, sheltered position with around 6-8 hours of sunlight daily

Any well-drained soil

Prefers sandy or loam soil and does best in slightly alkaline soils. This is a tough plant which can thrive in even poor soils.

Prune regularly

Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering. Prune mature plants back by half after flowering to prevent them becoming leggy.
