The highlights

  • Elegantly spreading tree
  • Medium tree - grows up to 8m
  • Striking red-pink and white flowers
  • RHS Plants for Pollinators

Description

  • One of the most distinctive hawthorn varieties, thanks to its impactful reddish pink and white blooms, ‘Crimson Cloud’ is a dazzling ornamental tree that offers a long season of interest.
  • The flowers boast bold crimson-to-magenta exteriors with snow white centres, typically appearing between April and June. The glossy green foliage serves as a lovely backdrop against which the flowers can shine, and takes on attractive bronze hues come autumn.
  • Red berries (haws) are produced in abundance in the autumn months, providing a valuable source of food for birds like yellowhammers and thrushes. The thorny nature of their branches also makes these trees excellent nesting sites.
  • The hawthorn has been certified as one of the RHS’s Plants for Pollinators, a designation indicating the tree’s benefits to pollinating insects like honeybees and the small eggar moth.
  • ‘Crimson Cloud’ is incredibly hardy and easy to grow, tolerating a wide range of soils and conditions, including chalky and clay sites. You can even use the haws to make jelly and wine! Seriously, what’s not to like?

What To Expect

9L Pot
This tree is supplied in a 9L Poly-Pot, which is approx D15 x H30cm. Poly-Pots use 70% less plastic then traditional pots and can be recycled easily. A 9L pot allows ample space for good root development and can support a good size tree.
Bare Root
Our bare root trees are lifted fresh from the field and packed straight away. You can be sure they will be fresh when they arrive. In winter, you can store for several weeks if kept in a cool, dark spot. Later in spring, when the temperature rises, you will want to plant within a few days of arrival.

How To Grow

Excellent pest and disease resistance

Generally unbothered by pests and diseases.MORE

Full Sun to Partial Shade

Position where the tree will receive at least 4-6 hours of sunlight every day during summer and spring. This variety can handled some partial shade where it receives its light as dappled shade.

Any fertile, well-drained soil

If your soil is particularly clay heavy and gets waterlogged often, make sure you mix in plenty of organic matter and perhaps even gravel or perlite to help improve drainage.

Prune annually

Prune Hawthorns annually to remove any branches that are diseased, or that rub against each other. You can also remove branches to open the tree up to more light. After a storm, remove any broken branches promptly.
