How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

May need protection against aphids (remove by hand, then spray the area with soapy water) or slugs (try a barrier of copper wire or crushed shells around the plant). If you notice discoloured foliage, you may have Astrantia Leaf Miner, whose larvae feed on the leaves. Flowers will still bloom, but if you want to control the larvae, you can encourage predators such as birds and parasitoid wasps to your garden.

Water often in Summer

Water well to keep the ground consistently moist. During hot, dry periods, this could require watering every few days or possibly even every day. This is especially true during the plants first few years before it has had the chance to establish extensive roots.

Full sun to partial shade

Does best with around six hours of sunlight per day, preferably in the mornings, with some aftrenoon shade. Tolerates shadier areas well.

Any well drained soil

Astrantia prefers fertile, well-drained soil but will be fine in any normal well-drained soil. If your soil is particularly poor or clay heavy, add some garden compost with perlite to improve drainage.
