Description

  • If you've got a sunny garden and a wall going spare, then this grape variety is an excellent option to add both ornamental and fruiting value to your outdoor space
  • This vine produces delicious green grapes in the autumn that can be eaten fresh, used to make homemade wine or incorporated into a range of different desserts
  • Perfect for training up and along horizontal wires fixed to the wall, over a seating area pergola or around a decorative archway, 'Vroege van der Laan' delights with its broad, lobed, light green foliage, and will instantly transport you to the sun-soaked foothills of Tuscany
  • A hardy variety, this vine is suitable for growing outdoors in British gardens, though it will still appreciate a more sheltered position where possible
  • Easy to grow and vigorous in nature, this variety is an ideal first grape vine for beginners to grow in their gardens, and can even be grown in a large pot provided it has support!

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Grape vines can be impacted by mildew, mould and scale insects. Mildew can be mitigated against by ensuring good air circulation between plants, the risk of mould can be reduced by practising good plant hygiene, and small populations of scale insect can be tolerated, so there's no immediate cause for concern if you notice any.

Water well when establishing

Water your grape vine routinely when establishing; vines grown in the lee of a wall or in a container will typically require more watering.

Full sun

Plant somewhere that your grape vine will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Any fertile, well-drained soil

Grape vines grow best in rich, fertile soil that drains well. If your soil is naturally a bit heavy, then incorporate some organic matter (like well-rotted manure) to improve its drainage.

Feed every spring

In spring, apply a high-potassium fertiliser at the base of your grape vine. If grown in a container, your vine will benefit from more regular liquid feeding throughout the growing season.
