The highlights

  • Sweet, fresh and very flavourful
  • Very late season variety
  • Eat straight from the plant or make jam!
  • Harvest in August

Description

  • Some raspberry varieties fruit in June or July, while others fruit in autumn, but 'Octavia'? It produces its fruit in August, just when the weather is hottest and you most want that refreshing hit of juicy homegrown fruit!
  • We supply this variety in the form of long canes, meaning you'll get fruit in your plant's first summer (rather than having to wait a year)
  • Producing plump raspberries bursting with flavour, if you want to try growing your own raspberries, we'd heartily recommend this variety!
  • Before you plant your canes, soak the roots in water for an hour, sprinkle some root grow into the planting hole, then plant your canes in the hole
  • What's that? You like pretty flowers as well as fruit? Today might just be your lucky day, because raspberry varieties like 'Octavia' produce charming little flowers before the fruit appears
  • We'd recommend creating a simple wire trellis for supporting your raspberry plants as they grow, either fixed to a wall or fence, or strung between two freestanding wooden posts (whichever you'd prefer)
  • One of only a small number of raspberry varieties to have been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (AGM)
  • Raspberry plants have been recognised by the RHS as one of its Plants for Pollinators, so you can rely on your canes to attract more bees to your garden

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Can be affected by aphids, raspberry beetles and grey mould.

Water regularly

Raspberry plants are pretty thirsty and ask that their soil be kept consistently moist. It's recommended that you water your plant(s) regularly throughout the growing season and especially during prolonged periods of hot, dry weather. Raspberry plants grown in pots require even more regular watering. When watering, aim to water at the plant's base, keeping the foliage, flowers and fruit dry if possible (this reduces the risk of fungal disease).

Full sun

Plant your raspberry cane(s) in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day).

Any moist, well-drained soil

If your soil drains poorly, consider enriching it with some organic matter (or even some horticultural grit/perlite). This variety prefers acidic or neutral soil conditions.

Feed every spring

An application of Vitax Q4 (or something similar) in the spring will help your raspberry cane(s) grow better.
