The highlights

  • Decadent, creamy-tasting walnuts
  • Award of Garden Merit winner
  • Eat fresh or bake into bread
  • Harvest from late September

Description

  • A compact but still substantial walnut tree with smooth, grey bark and dark green, fragrant foliage
  • Lara is disease resistant, self fertile and produces heavy crops of large nuts from a young age (3-4 years)
  • Creamy, light brown walnuts are produced in early to mid autumn. They can be harvested green for pickling or left until autumn to dry and store
  • Grows to 12m but can be pruned smaller
  • Short, greenish catkins appear in late spring to early summer, attracting early pollinators
  • RHS Award of Garden Merit winner
  • Grow in full sun or partial shade in a sheltered spot
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader, if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better shaped tree. This can stop the tree becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth.MORE

What To Expect

Supplied as:

Bare root
Our bare root trees are lifted fresh from the field, wrapped in a moisture retentive covering and packed straight away. You can be sure they will be fresh when they arrive. In winter, you can store for several weeks if kept in a cool, dark spot. Later in spring, when the temperature rises, you will want to plant within a few days of arrival.
9L poly-pot
This tree is supplied in a 9L Poly-Pot, which is approx D15 x H30cm. Poly-Pots use 70% less plastic than traditional pots and can be recycled. A 9L pot allows ample space for good root development and can support a good size tree.

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Walnut trees are not prone to many pests or diseases, although they may occasionally be affected by coral spot, aphids or walnut blister mites. If you see aphids or other bugs, pick them off by hand and spray the infected area with some soapy water. To avoid coral spot, always prune in dry weather.

Water when newly planted

Water establishing plants during dry spells for at least a year after planting.

Any fertile, well-drained soil

Prefers fertile well draining soil. Can also tolerate clay soil but you will need to take some steps to improve drainage, such as mixing in fine horticultural grit or perlite to the surrounding soil when planting.

No feeding required

Your tree will get all the nutrients it needs from the soil (make sure it's good by mixing in some compost or rootgrow when planting) ?v=1613300929
