The highlights

  • Give this plant all the sun
  • Plant in a border or large patio pot
  • Striking flowers from June to October
  • Generally unfussy when it comes to soil type

Description

  • A dahlia worthy of a dedicated aria or two, we reckon this variety is certainly one that would impress ol' Giuseppe
  • The fully double dinnerplate blooms consist of alluring burgundy petals flared with linen white tips. Set against the backdrop of contrasting deep green foliage, these flowers leave a lasting impression
  • Makes an incredibly impressive cut flower bouquet!
  • Plant alongside similarly-coloured osteospermums, echinaceas and salvias for a stunning garden display
  • With its large, heavy flowers, this variety can be susceptible to flopping so some staking might be necessary if you notice the stalks struggling under the weight of the blooms

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

'Verdi Glory' can have issues with slugs, aphids, capsid bugs, earwigs and powdery mildew. To protect your plant against bacterial infections, maintain good garden hygiene. Space the plants out properly to allow for good air circulation. For slugs and snails, it's recommended that you keep the area surrounding the plant dry and as free of debris as possible, especially at night as slugs and snails thrive in damp conditions. You can use barriers (such as egg shells or copper wire around the plant) to prevent slugs and snails reaching the leaves. For aphids, check the leaves routinely for infestations. Remove the bugs by hand and spray the infected area with soapy water. You can also plant a companion plant nearby - marigolds, for instance - which will attract predatory insects such as ladybirds that will eat the aphids.

Water regularly

Water your dahlia often, especially when the weather is hot and dry. Try to water your plant at least once every week. If you notice that your plant looks particularly dry or distressed during extended hot periods, then you may want to increase the amount you water it.

Full sun

Position 'Verdi Glory' in a fully sunny spot (at least six hours of direct sunlight every day).

Any well-drained soil

This dahlia does its best work in well-drained soil that's been enriched with organic matter like compost.

Feed regularly

Apply a general purpose feed when planting. After that, from July to September, feed every couple of weeks with a high-potash liquid feed (like tomato feed).
