The highlights

  • Grows well in both sun and shade
  • Rapidly covers walls and fences
  • Foliage becomes a deep red in autumn
  • Cold hardy down to -15°C

Description

  • This highly-vigorous and alluring variety of Boston ivy most definitely packs an aesthetic punch with its bold foliage
  • Featuring vivid green, dentate leaves in the spring and summer months, before turning a bright copper red in the autumn, 'Green Spring' will instantly transform any wall or fence it's trained against
  • This plucky plant is hardy, easy to grow and requires little to no pruning (just trim it as you see fit to keep it to the space available)
  • Fast-growing in nature, this variety of parthenocissus is perfect for covering unsightly vertical surfaces in your garden; this plant helps turn the boring into the bloomin' brilliant
  • Got a shaded garden? Not a problem for this plant! It can happily grow in fully shaded spots as well as sunshine
  • It's recommended that you give your young plant some support as it establishes (like a trellis or wiring). After a while, the plant will start clinging to the surface of its own accord, using suckers, and support will no longer be needed
  • Please Note: Our climbers are pruned back each winter, and some during the summer, so you may find at certain times of year they do not cover the whole 90cm cane. This is intentional to ensure the best growth when you plant out

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Generally free of disease. This plant may have issues with Vine Weevils and Red Spider Mites. Inspect the leaves regularly for signs of pests, including webs and any notches bitten out of the foliage. If you find Red Spider Mites, then try misting the plant as they typically thrive in drier conditions. If you find Vine Weevils, then try to pick off as many as possible.

Water often in first year

In the first year after planting, you'll want to water your 'Green Spring' plant regularly (a deep soak once every week or so) to keep the soil moist, especially during drought or drier periods. As the plant establishes itself, though, its watering requirements will diminish to the point where it should be relatively self-sufficient. Watering is still recommended during drought conditions and hot spells.

Full sun to full shade

This plant can be grown in any light conditions.

Any well-drained soil

This plant will grow well in any fertile, well-drained soil. To improve drainage, consider working in some compost or well-rotted manure (this will also help enrich the soil, too).

No feeding required

No additional feeding is usually needed, however you might want to consider applying an all-purpose fertiliser during spring to encourage better root growth.
