Perennials born in Herefordshire, blooming in your garden
Our perennials start life in the rolling Herefordshire hills, where Jack and his team trial over 250 new varieties each year to bring you the best performing and most sustainable plants in the UK. With over forty years of excellence, it’s no surprise that they’ve won the HTA Plant Grower of the Year award two years running.

Which lupin?
Lupins never used to look this good - you’ve got George Russel’s 1912 experiments to thank for the closely packed flowers and eyecatching colours, and Sarah Conibear taking up the baton more recently with her jawdroppingly perfect ombre or bicoloured West Country Lupins. ‘Legendary’ lupins do what they say on the tin, with classic colours, reliable performance and strong growth year after year.

Planting schemes and partners
Don’t even think of planting a cottage garden without some lupins dotted amongst the borders to provide pops of colour. They’re also impressive planted in drifts of a single colour or two and certainly good enough to showcase in a patio pot. Rich in pollen and nectar, lupins are also a fantastic way to attract bees and butterflies to a wildlife garden.

Growing tips
Lupins are easy to grow - plant them in a sunny or partly shaded position away from strong winds, and feed and water them regularly until they’re fully established. Deadhead them as the flowers fade to get a second flush later in the season. It’s easy to get more lupins by collecting the seeds - just wait until the flowers have finished and shake them into an envelope, then plant again in the spring.
Lupin FAQs
When is the best time to plant lupins in the UK?
Lupins are best planted from late spring to early summer, after the last frost has passed in your area, but any time of year when the ground is workable and the temperature is mild is fine.
Do lupins need a lot of water?
Like many perennials, lupins like their soil to be consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water them well when they’re newly planted, then ease off once they’re well established, watering regularly only during hot and dry weather.
How tall do lupin plants grow?
Depending on the variety, lupins can grow between 60 to 150cm tall.
Do lupins need support?
Some of the taller lupin varieties may need support to avoid them from flopping over. You can provide support with stakes, ring supports or planting them against a fence or wall.
How do I care for lupin plants?
To get the best from your lupins, feed them with a balanced fertiliser every spring. Deadhead the faded flowers to encourage continuous blooming and mulch around the base of the plant in autumn, to help keep moisture in the soil and weeds out.
When do lupins bloom?
Lupins bloom from May to June and often beyond if you deadhead them. This can vary depending on the variety and the conditions they’re grown in.
Happy plants make happy customers

Plants arrived in great condition and very promptly. Well established - much better than the ones I got at my local garden centre.

I continue to be so impressed with Roots. Their customer care, knowledge of their subject: from planting hedges to pruning roses and more, has been a great support.
