The highlights

  • Wavy leaves on bright red, corkscrew stems
  • Catkins appear before the foliage
  • Twisting form adds year-round visual interest
  • RHS Award of Garden Merit winner

Description

  • A highly striking and impressive twisted willow, 'Scarlet Curls' is an ornamental tree of understandable renown
  • Crimson coloured, tortuous branches add exceptional visual interest throughout the year, but particularly when bare of leaves in the winter
  • The newer, red shoot growth becomes more orange or tawny as it ages
  • Pretty downy catkins appear in the spring before the tree's twisting, lanceolate foliage comes through/li>
  • A naturally hardy tree, this willow likes to be planted in moist but well drained soil, and in a sunny position
  • Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit
  • Our trees are usually between 18 and 36 months old at the time of dispatch
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader, if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better shaped tree. This can stop the tree becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Can be affected by aphids, caterpillars or rust.

Water when newly planted

Water your willow deeply every week or so for the duration of the first growing season. If the soil is dry to the touch and your tree's leaves are wilting, this is an indication it needs watering.

Full sun

Salix 'Scarlet Curls' does best in a fully sunny spot, receiving at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.

Fertile, moist and well drained soil

Willow trees prefer to be planted in moist, well draining soil which is either slightly acidic or neutral in pH.

Feeding not required

This tree doesn't need additional feeding, however when planting, add a good amount of rotted compost into the hole, just to give it an initial boost.
